COURSE OBJECTIVES
This class is designed to provide advanced level Web design experience. Course
topics, examples, and assignments are related with contemporary Web design
skills.
However,
this course does not limit the course content to the technical skills of Web
design. The instructor of the course will expect students to contemplate the
effects
of their Web design strategies on users' Web experience.
This course includes a plenty of assigned practices of Web
design. The instructor will
lecture
on many aspects of Web technologies and students are expected
to
take notes, practice,
and complete provided assignments. In the end, this course aims
at
providing
fundamental
and advanced
technology
understandings and practices. Students will be self-sufficient
in
advancing their Web design skills in their future Web design projects
after completing this course.
SCHEDULE
Lectures,
readings, practices, and assignments will complement each other, rather than
being redundant. Thus, you will need to do the practices
and
the assignments regularly.
The
amount
of
assignment
is moderate, but you will often need to work carefully. Especially, careful attention to
the scripting codes for the Web design project is an important aspect of this
class.
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION
Attendance
Attendance is the most basic responsibility of students. See Grading section for the class attendance policy.
Participation
Participation will take various forms including questions, case
examples, presentations, and many more. Class participation will be added to your final
score as extra
credits.
Student Conferences:
Do not hesitate to meet or call the instructor if you have any
question on the course or academic concerns. Please
email (gyun@bgsu.edu) and make an appointment if you want to meet the instructor outside
office hours.
Extra Credit:
There may be some opportunities to participate in research studies.
You will receive extra credits for those participations.
ACADEMIC HONESTY & PROFESSIONALISM
Academic honesty
Academic honesty is the foundation of our teaching-learning relationship. BGSU
Student Handbook classifies four types of academic honesty violation: Cheating;
Fabrication; Facilitating academic dishonesty; Plagiarism. Academic dishonesty
will not be tolerated, and any student engaging in such conduct will automatically
fail this course.
Professionalism
The instructor will assume equal contribution to the group
project from every member of a team. While the peer evaluation will be directly
reflected in the final group project score, disregard of your group project responsibility
will be put into the consideration along with professionalism components in the
decision of the final letter grade. Professional conduct is expected from students
in this course. Although the score that you earn from various activities may
reflect our level of intellectual achievement in this course, it is not the
only determinant factor of your final letter grade. In every aspect of your interaction
with the instructor or classmates, you have to be professional.
Professionalism includes, but is not limited to, (1) completing tasks and readings
in a timely manner, (2) submitting class projects that look professional
(no spelling or grammar errors and suitable to the task), (3) taking personal
responsibility for your actions (for example, the computer ate your group project
is not an acceptable excuse), (4) showing courtesy to others (no chatting and
sleeping, no cellular phone, and no instant messing during class),
and (5) undertake all class related communications in a professional
manner.
The
instructor
reserves
the right to adjust the final letter grade downward if a student deems to have
violated professionalism to a substantial degree during the semester.
GRADING
Attendance
There will be no penalty for 3 absences. However, 30 points will be deducted
from your attendance score for each absence from the 4th absence. For instance,
if you miss classes 4 times, you will get 30 points deduction from your final
score.
Or, if you miss classes 5 times, you will get 60 points deduction from your
final
score. However, if you miss classes more than 6 times,
you will
automatically
receive an F in this course. A late arrival or an early departure will be treated
as an absence. I expect you to reserve "penalty free 3 absences" for
the emergencies such as death of an immediate family member or serious illness.
If you don't want any penalty after missing more than 3 classes, you should submit
documents indicating the situation where you needed more than 3 absences.
Assignments:
Students are expected to submit assignments in time. The failure of each submission
will deduct 30 points from the final score. For instance, if you fail to submit
an assignment, you will get 30 points deduction from your final score. Or, if
you fail to submit two assignments, you will get 60 points deduction. However,
if you fail to submit assignments more than 3 times, you will automatically
receive
an
F
in
this course. Late submissions will received 10 points deduction each day.
Also, students should submit a complete assignment which satisfy the required
elements of the assignment. The assignments which do not satisfy specific assignment
criteria will be considered as an incomplete.
Quizzes:
Some weeks will have quizzes. The quizzes will check whether the students have gone through tutorial lectures or assigned materials. Each quiz will contain about 10 questions and all quiz scores will be added to the final score.
Three class
presentations (50 points for each presentation: 150 total points):
You will choose a presentation topic on the first or second week of the class
and you will be assigned to do three small (10-20 minute) presentations during
the
normal class hours. Each student become an expert in one of the areas of Web
design (see presentation topics and schedules here). Three presentations are specifically designed to monitor students' improvement
in one of the areas of expertise. Students are expected to accumulate knowledge
over three presentation on one topic.
Presentation
grading
will base on these criteria (see grading criteria here). It is
always strongly recommended to consult your presentation content with the instructor before your presentation .
Individual project (300 points):
Each student will develop a website. The topics of the website will be proposed by each student and the instructor will approve them. Individual project grading will base on these criteria (see grading criteria here).
Group project (300 points):
Two students will form a group and develop a web site. The topics
of the web site will be proposed by each group and the instructor will approve them. Group project grading will base on these
criteria (see grading criteria here).
Professionalism:
You will receive no point deduction if you attend and participate in lectures
professionally.
FINAL GRADING SCALE
A = 91 to 100 percent
B = 81 to 90 percent
C = 71 to 80 percent
D = 61 to 70 percent
F = below 60 percent
Based on the scale
above, you will be assigned a letter grade at the
end of the class. The final grade for this course will be assigned using
the scale above on the combined total of your points earned over the class.
